End date : April 2024
Background : Adolescent and young adults (AYA) (15-25 years-old) is a population with specific gynecological challenges : the initiation of sexual activity, which can involve risky sexual behavior leading to an increased risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), the first contraception, and the implementation of preventive measures against cervical cancer.
Among the AYA population, cancer is the leading cause of disease-related mortality, but recent diagnostic and therapeutic advances have improved survival. As a result, new questions and considerations are emerging, such as the quality of their gynecological care after cancer treatment.
Studies conducted abroad underscored inadequate gynecological follsow-up, with irregular cervical cancer screening and low contraceptive coverage, leading to an increased risk of unplanned pregnancies.
In France, to-date there is no specific data on the gynecological follow-up of these adolescents and young adults treated for cancer.
Objectives : The aim of the project is to study the gynecological care of AYAs after active cancer treatment between the age of 15 and 25, in comparison with a cohort of AYA without cancer.
Design : Matched retrospective exposed-unexposed national cohort study on a national scale using data from the French National Insurance System Database.
This project consists of three distinct components:
- Prevention, screening, and gynecological follow-up
- Contraception and voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion)
- Fertility preservation, Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) and pregnancies
Key words : Adolescent and Young Adults (AYA), cancer survivors, gynecological follow-up
