Excess mortality among surgical patients during the Covid-19 pandemic in France
Successive waves of SARS-CoV-2 had indirect effects on population health. Mobilization of the majority of available resources to manage COVID-19 at the hospital profoundly disrupted normal surgical activities. The safety of care for non-infected surgical patients may have been negatively affected by restricted access to intensive or intermediate care units (ICUs). Our study estimated the excess in surgical mortality due to the pandemic, and the hospital learning effect between the two first waves.
